Tournée en Italie avec Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider
9-12 Novembre 2018

Introduction

The COE’s last performance of Dvořák’s 7th Symphony was during summer 2016 under the baton of Bernard Haitink at the Lucerne Festival, marking his 50th anniversary at the prestigious festival.  The profoundly intimate work has a melancholic atmosphere and we are looking forward very much to experiencing Nikolaj’s interpretation of this symphony that is so rich in dramatic expression.

Originally, the tour had been planned with conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada with programme to include Kodaly’s Dances of Galánta and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. However following the advice of his doctor, Andrés has sadly had to withdraw from our project this week due to an injury to his knee. We are very fortunate and extremely grateful to Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider who has agreed to step in at short notice to conduct the COE in Dvořák’s Symphony No.7.

Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider

Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider is equally at home with baton or bow in hand. His recent and coming conducting engagements will see him at the helms of the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Cleveland Symphony, Orchestre National de Lyon, Montreal Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony and Luxembourg Philharmonic.  This season he expands the list of Opera houses he appears with, by making debuts with the Semperoper Dresden and the Hamburg Opera and also continues his Nielsen project with the Odense Symphony Orchestra conducting and recording the complete symphonies. Also a virtuoso violinist of distinction, he features as Artist in Residence with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, both performing with and conducting the orchestra in a series of concerts across the 18/19 season, including his conducting debut at the Musikverein and a European tour with Philippe Jordan.

As soloist with the COE, Szeps-Znaider will now perform and direct Beethoven’s Violin Concerto instead of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.

Over the years, the Orchestra has performed Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with many distinguished  violinists including Leonidas Kavakos, who also directed the work, and most recently with Lisa Batiashvili under Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Christian Tetzlaff under Robin Ticciati.

Ferrara Musica

Our tour to Italy with Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider takes us to Vicenza on 9 November, Reggio Emilia on 10 November, and Treviso on 12 November where our concerts are marking the opening of the classical music season in all three towns. On 11 November we perform at the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara, which has always been “a second home” since the COE’s residency from 1989 to 1997. Our concert in Ferrara features in a special season of Ferrara Musica, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary with all the ensembles that were supported, developed and furthered thanks to the artistic vision of our founding mentor Claudio Abbado.

Read more about the role Abbado had in our residency at Ferrara Musica.

Late May 2019 we will be returning to Italy with Antonio Pappano and Janine Jansen.
