The COE is thrilled to be working with Daniel Harding again after their first tour together back in 2019. The Orchestra first met Daniel when he was assistant to Claudio Abbado in the 1980’s. Many COE musicians have kept in close contact with him over the last decades and we look forward to travelling to Spain with him, performing works by Beethoven and Sibelius at Pollença, Santander, San Sebastian and Torroella Music Festivals.

In this instance, the COE and Daniel Harding propose an exercise of comparison between two symphonies that occupy the same place in their composers‘ catalogue. Separated by a century, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 was performed for the first time in 1806 and Sibelius‘ Symphony No. 4 was premiered in 1911. The two have a similar orchestration, but while Beethoven’s Fourth moves away from the agitation of his third symphony to speak of feelings and moods (obsession, love, happiness, fun and wit), Sibelius‘ Symphony No. 4 is a work of intense drama that comes less easily to the audience than Beethoven’s symphony, but is arguably more rewarding. Both symphonies are particularly meaningful for the COE who released two Beethoven Symphony cycle recordings with two of its Honorary Members – one with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in 1991 and one with Yannick Nézet-Séguin (nominated for an OPUS Klassik Award in 2023) in 2022. The COE also recorded a Sibelius Symphony cycle with one of its closest and dearest artistic partners, Paavo Berglund. This cycle is available on CD, as well as on DVD and BluRay (Helsinki Festival 1998 version).

Daniel Harding CBE is Music and Artistic Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, with whom in 2017 he celebrated his 10-year anniversary, and Conductor Laureate of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, with whom he has worked for over 20 years. In the 2014/15 season he devised and curated the celebrated Interplay Festival with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, presenting a series of concerts and related inspirational talks and installations involving artists, academics, scientists and philosophers. The influential programming continues to be a popular feature at Berwaldhallen. A renowned opera conductor, he has led critically acclaimed productions at the Teatro alla Scala Milan, Theater an der Wien, Wiener Staatsoper, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and at the Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg Festivals. He continues to work regularly with the Wiener Philharmoniker, Berliner Philharmoniker, Bayerischer Rundfunk Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Filarmonica della Scala Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle and the London Symphony Orchestra. In 2018 he was named Artistic Director of the Anima Mundi Festival. He is a qualified airline pilot.
