The COE is thrilled to have been invited back to South Korea, this time with the generous support of Hyundai, for a series of concerts with Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits and Korean pianist Sunwook Kim. We will be performing two different programmes featuring works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Schubert in Seoul, Daegu and Incheon on 5, 8, 10 and 11 November. Aside from these four public concerts, a private concert will be held at Seoul’s Lotte Hall on 9th November.

The last time we went to South Korea, the world was a very different place, even though it was only back in March 2018. No one had any idea about what was going to hit the planet a couple of years later and the musicians had a wonderful time performing two concerts at the Lotte Hall in Seoul with violinist Leonidas Kavakos, as well as sampling Korean street food at local markets, ambling through the old streets and visiting marvelous temples. Fast-forward four years and a half: the COE has been lucky enough to survive a global pandemic, and performing with a Ukrainian conductor now takes on a whole new meaning…

Artists

Kirill Karabits has been conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra since 2009. He was the first Ukrainian conductor to be named Principal Conductor of a UK orchestra. Initially, his contract was for 4 years… and he is still there 9 years on! He has also directed many operas.

Sunwook Kim started studying the piano at age 3 and came to international recognition when he won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2006, aged just 18, becoming the competition’s youngest winner for 40 years, as well as its first Asian winner.  In 2013, Sunwook Kim made his debut at the BBC Proms with Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The same year he was selected by the Beethoven-Haus Bonn to become the first beneficiary of its new Mentoring Programme, a status which grants him exclusive access to the house’s unique collections and resources.
