Introduction
Did you know that ticket sales of a sold-out COE concert at the 1,000-seat Cité de la Musique in Paris, or at the 1,950-seat Barbican Centre in London, or even at the 2,450-seat Alte Oper in Frankfurt will not cover the cost of the performance? Not only that, but unlike many other world-class orchestras the Chamber Orchestra of Europe has to operate without any public subsidy.
That is the reason why the COE relies on essential private financial support for its activities, which also include the COE Academy, educational and outreach projects and CD/DVD recordings. Your involvement has never been more important to the future of the COE, and we would like to invite you to become a Friend of the Orchestra and share in its success.
The great breadth of the musicians’ cultural influences speaks volumes about the unique nature of the COE’s performances. However, with the players’ homes being spread throughout Europe, it is also of necessity a touring orchestra without a national base. Needless to say, it is a costly exercise to bring the musicians together at the first city of each tour, arrange onward travel and accommodation for them for each engagement, and provide return travel at the end of the project.
Over many years the COE has benefited from the generosity of a range of corporate and individual Friends. The Gatsby Charitable Foundation has been its most valuable Friend for many years, and amongst its other loyal supporters none is more significant than The Underwood Trust in the UK. The Principal Oboe Chair and the Principal Flute Chair are also supported by the Rupert Hughes Will Trust in memory of the late Rupert Hughes. We are also greatly indebted to the various trusts of American Friends which have made donations to the American Friends of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, based in New York.
Clearly the Orchestra could not have won its many accolades or achieved so many unforgettable performances and recordings without financial support from all its Friends.
