Rachel Frost, Oboe and Cor Anglais

Rachel Frost studied the oboe with Leon Goossens and Celia Nicklin, winning an instrumental award at Cambridge University and the Oboe Prize at the Royal Academy of Music, London. She won scholarships to continue her studies with Ingo Goritzki at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany. Rachel has played as guest Principal oboist and/or solo cor anglais with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Gewandhaus Leipzig Orchestra, amongst others. Since 1992, she has been the solo cor anglais and second oboist with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. She has recorded wind chamber music with the COE wind soloists, the complete Zelenka trio sonatas with Douglas Boyd, and is a regular chamber music guest at the Domleschg Festival in Switzerland and the Cerne Abbas Festival in Dorset. In 2012 Rachel founded her own trio d’anches ensemble, Trio Roseau, with whom she plays mixed chamber concerts and has recently recorded three Mozart CDs. These include the five Mozart Divertimenti KV 439b and opera arias from Clemenza di Tito, Cosi Fan Tutte and Don Giovanni. The latest CD, MDG October 2022, also includes several beautiful Mozart concert arias arranged by her husband, Ulf-Guido Schäfer, for solo oboe and solo cor anglais with string Trio.

Rachel also teaches the Cor Anglais for the Oboe Class of Prof. Kai Frömbgen at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover. She has just inspired and recorded the composition Reminiszenzen (Spring 2023) for Cor Anglais and string trio composed by Ulf-Guido Schäfer and sponsored by a scholarship from the Deutsche Musikrat Neustart Kultur program.
