The Chamber Orchestra of Europe and its Honorary Member Sir András Schiff open this year’s Kronberg Academy Festival with two concerts on 23rd September. The theme of the Festival is “Good Vibrations” and the programmes should not disappoint with Schubert’s Entr’acte No. 3 from Rosamunde and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto at 18.00 (also featuring violinist William Hagen, cellist Bryan Cheng and pianist Martina Consonni) followed by Schubert’s 5 Minuets and 6 Trios D89 and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 at 20.15.

This September sees the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and its Honorary Member Sir András Schiff celebrate the 40th anniversary of their first concert together performing works by Mozart and Dvorak at the Herbstgold Festival in Eisenstadt, at the Dvorak Festival in Prague and at the Enescu Festival in Bucharest. On 13th September only, in Eisenstadt, the COE will be joined by Julian Rachlin, Artistic Director of Herbstgold, and world-class violinist Janine Jansen in a programme by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Beethoven.

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe performs for the first time at the Pannonhalma Art Festival in Hungary, curated by Hungarian pianists Dénes Várjon and Izabella Simon with whom the COE has performed several times over the years. The Festival takes place in the beautiful Archabbey of Pannonhalma and, aside from Dénes and Izabella, will feature clarinetist and composer Jörg Widmann, cellist Nicolas Altstaedt and soprano Csilla Csővári. The four concerts, performed by the COE strings, will put in parallel the music of Mendelssohn and that of Jörg Widmann.

We are delighted to have been invited again to perform at the majestic Odeon of Herodes Atticus for this year’s Epidaurus Festival after last year’s concert with Sir Simon Rattle and Magdalena Kožená. On 10th July 2025, we will be performing with conductor Constantinos Carydis and pianist Francesco Piemontesi in a programme by Liszt, Purcell and Berlioz. We will open the concert with a world première of O Lightless Light! – Ode to Oedipus by the Greek composer Periklis Koukos.

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe is looking forward to its yearly residency at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus for the 2025 edition of the Capitale d’Eté with Yannick Nézet-Séguin. This year, the orchestra will perform two symphonic concerts – Mozart’s Symphonies Nos. 40 and 41, Requiem and Great Mass in c minor with the RIAS Kammerchor – and one chamber music concert with Yannick on the piano and members of the COE’s string section.

For this year’s Herbstgold Festival at its residency in Schloss Esterházy (Eisenstadt), the COE will be joined by Martha Argerich, Iddo Bar-Shai, narrator and daughter of Martha Argerich Annie Argerich-Dutoit and Leader/Director Marieke Blankestijn for the Festival’s opening concert on 11th September, featuring works by Haydn as well as Saint-Saëns’s Carnival of the Animals. This concert will be broadcast live on medici.tv and also on the Austrian radio station ORF 1 on 22nd October. On 14th September, the Orchestra will perform works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky with Julian Rachlin, director of the Festival, and pianist Yefim Bronfman. This concert will be broadcast live on medici.tv and also on the Austrian TV channel ORF III at a later date.

For its northern-most concert ever, the COE, directed by Lorenza Borrani, is joined by mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland for the opening concert of the Nordland Music Festival on 3rd August at the Stormen Concert Hall in Bodø, Norway. This is in the context of Bodø being European Capital of Culture 2024. The programme includes works by Grieg, Mendelssohn, Mahler and Beethoven, all arranged for string orchestra – plus two clarinets for some pieces.

The Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden is welcoming the COE and Yannick Nézet-Séguin for their annual residency, La Capitale d’Eté this July. There will also be a chamber music concert featuring Yannick on the piano, as well as Joyce DiDonato and COE soloists.

The special friendship between the COE and Sir Simon has been blossoming since their first project together, at the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic back in October 2020, and we are very much looking forward to this tour.

The tour will actually start with a chamber music concert in Eisenstadt as part of Sir András’s Building Bridges project, featuring  COE soloists violinist Lorenza Borrani, violist Nimrod Guez and cellist Richard Lester with pianists Martina Consonni and Itai Navon. In the next four concerts, audiences will be able to hear COE soloists oboist Olivier Stankiewicz, bassoonist Rie Koyama, Lorenza Borrani and Richard Lester in Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante.

Our next tour after Easter is made up of three very contrasting projects – the first concert is a thought-provoking programme based on contrasts and relationships at the Megaron in Athens on 20th April, with Constantinos Carydis and Jan Lisiecki, featuring Greek composers Koukos and Skalkottas, as well as Schnittke, Shostakovich, Ives and Beethoven; this will be followed immediately by a tour to Spain and Germany with Joshua Bell – Murcia on 23rd April, Zaragoza on the 24th and Ludwigsburg on the 26th; and finally on 29th April, the COE will open the Budapest Spring Festival with a concert at Budapest’s Italian Cultural Institute with world-renowned cellist Miklós Perényi and violin/director Ben Gilmore.

As always, the COE is looking forward to its now well-established end-of-year tour with Sir Antonio Pappano, one of the orchestra’s closest friends. This year they are joined by the Italian pianist Beatrice Rana in a program by Elgar, Schumann and Dvorak. Beatrice will perform Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto, which she recorded for Warner Classics with the COE and Yannick Nézet-Séguin last year at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. The CD, which also includes Clara Wieck-Schumann’s Piano Concerto No. 1, was released earlier this year to great international acclaim.

The COE is looking forward to performing again at the Schloss Esterhazy in Eisenstadt, where it has been orchestra-in-residence since 2022. This year’s festival’s opening concert on 13th September features the COE and Julian Rachlin, Artistic Director of Herbstgold, in works by Prokofiev, Glinka and Tchaikovsky. For its second concert on the 16th, as Sir John Eliot Gardiner had to cancel the rest of his concerts this year due to health reasons, the COE is joined by the amazing young conductor Maxim Emelyanychev, principal conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and soprano Lucy Crowe in a programme by Haydn, Weber and Schubert. Both concerts will be broadcast on Medici TV.

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe has been invited with François Leleux and Lisa Batiashvili to perform a concert which was initially part of the Salzburg Mozartwoche in January, cancelled this year due to the spread of the Omicron variant. The COE and François Leleux – its former principal oboe – will perform two concerts at this year’s Mozartfest in Würzburg and Augsburg on 26th and 27th May. The programme features Haydn’s Symphony No. 22, Arias from Mozart operas arranged for oboe and orchestra, Cimarosa’s Concerto for Oboe and Strings and Mozart’s Symphony No. 28. In Würzburg, COE cellist Kate Gould will perform Le Corps des Cordes for solo cello by Isabel Mundry and in Augsburg, a COE chamber ensemble will perform Widmann’s Aria for Violin, Viola and 11 strings. Both concerts will be directed by COE Leader for this project, Jose Maria Blumenschein.

The COE is looking forward to making its debut with Czech conductor Jakub Hrusa, performing concerts in Pistoia and Bologna in Italy this spring. On 11th March, the COE will be kick-starting its three-year long residency at the Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt with a fundraising concert for Ukraine with pianist Fazıl Say. They will then perform at the Isarphilharmonie, a brand new concert hall which opened in Munich on 8th October 2021. The programme features Haydn’s Symphony No. 96 “The Miracle”, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, Fazıl Say’s own composition “Yürüyen Köşk” (The Moving Mansion) for Piano and String Orchestra and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6.
